Indigenous populations extend back for hundreds of years. More than a century ago, Culion was established as one of the world’s largest leper colonies. Families, friends, and communities inherit the poverty, isolation, and stigma that were hallmarks of Culion in the days when it was known as “The Island of the Living Dead.”
In 2006, Culion celebrated a Centennial: “100 Years of Protection and Blessing.” Today, there is much hope for a brighter future. However, approximately 22,000 residents of Culion struggle to meet the challenges of the new millennium. The Dr. Theresa Kohen Foundation plays a large part in this future through its dedication to serving the poorest residents of the island.
