SUPPORT THE CULLON ISLAND COMMUNITY
The focus of the Foundation’s humanitarian work is on Culion Island, Palawan, which is historically the location of the Culion Leper Colony. It is now a small remote agricultural and fishing community with a proud and evolving history.
About 100 surviving leprosy patients are still living in the community with their families. The suffering from this terrible disease, though eradicated by modern medicine, extends beyond the patients themselves. Geographic isolation, seasonal weather extremes, limited medical facilities and educational opportunities, malnourishment and unemployment are still challenges.
EDUCATiNG THE CHILDREN
At this time, over 100 students receive scholarships for books, fees, tuition, and other expenses to attend school. Local schools represented include Culion Elementary School, Malaking Patag Elementary School, Baldat Elementary School, Culion National High School, WPU (Western Philippines University), and Loyola College, Culion.
Each year we see graduations from high school and college in Culion. A recent graduate became a teacher at the Malaking Patag school and has made important contributions there. Several students have left Culion Island to pursue college education elsewhere.
HOW TO HELP
As the community of Culion gradually mmoves beyond the era of the leper colony and seeks a future based on tourism and local industry, the Foundation will continue to be a significant advocate for the education of children and improvement in the lives of the less fortunate members of thhe community.
